Glossary

Glazing: The glazing, or glass, within you window unit depends on the your property type and window frame. Surrounded by glazing compound known as 'putty', glazing is layered two or three times over for thermal insulation. Condensation can build up between these layers, which therefore creates misting and drafty windows.
Hinge: The element of the window or door unit that allows for opening and closing.

Friction Hinge: As the name would suggest, a friction hinge is a hinge that does not allow a window or door unit to swing open and closed freely.

Mullion: The mullion is the part of the frame between one or more pieces of glazing. This can often be decorative, but is ultimately a functional, rigid support bar for the whole frame.

Top Rail: On any piece of framing, the horizontal bar at the top of the frame is called a top rail and is ultimately a structural element.

Locking Handle: The handle used to operate and secure the window or door. Please be vigilant in keeping your home secure; security measures are effective only when the locks are engaged.

Locking Mechanism: The element of the unit that secures the window or frame against intruders once the lock is engaged.

Child Restrictor: Most commonly used on windows that can be access by smaller children, child restrictors, or tilt restrictors, limit how far a window can be opened.

Cill: Similar to the top rail, the cill is a structural element on every window or door. The cill however, is found at the bottom of the frame therefore forming a foundation for the structural frame.
